This five-part safety series offers parents and families practical tools and information to support safe schools. When it comes to protecting students, staff, and schools, we all have a role to play.
Help us stamp out social media rumors: Information spreads quickly on social media, and we understand why students, parents, and families may be concerned when they hear about potential safety threats online. Please know that our District and school leaders take every report seriously and work closely with our law enforcement partners to investigate and assess each situation. If you become aware of a potential safety issue, we ask that you call your school office before coming to campus. While well-intentioned, an unexpected influx of non-students can unintentionally create alarm and make it more difficult for us to investigate and maintain calm. We also ask that if you see an alarming post on social media, please share it with school administration directly rather than reposting it, so that they can review the information and respond appropriately.
Monitor your student’s online activity with GoGuardian Parent: All of our families have free access to GoGuardian Parent which is a tool that allows parents/guardians to monitor their student’s use of their district-issued devices – including their student’s browsing history, internet searches, and more. Click here to download the app and learn more about how GoGuardian Parent can help keep kids safe online. The GUHSD Infinite Campus Parent Portal is required for GoGuardian Parent. Click here to access.
A note about anonymous social media posts: When posts are made anonymously, it’s important to know that schools do not have tools available to trace them to their source, nor can we remove posts from social media platforms. In these situations, we encourage families to report the post to school administration for our awareness and report it directly to the platform where it was posted with a request for removal (see next item). Any information the platform provides about the source of the post can also be shared with school administration to support our investigation. If the post contains a threat of any kind, please notify school administration immediately and submit a tip through P3 Tips.
How to report directly to social media platforms: Most social media platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Snapchat, have built-in reporting tools for content that is unsafe, threatening, or bullying. Students and families can submit reports for review, block harmful accounts, and adjust privacy settings to maintain safety. Knowing how to report content directly helps stop the spread of misinformation and harmful behavior online.
Reminder about P3 Tips: Students can report suspicious activity to San Diego Crime Stoppers using P3 Tips. The P3 app is available on all GUHSD Chromebooks and makes it easy to submit a report anonymously.
Sincerely,
District Safety Committee
