Grossmont Union High School District

Retirement from the Grossmont Union High School District is both a milestone and a meaningful transition. Whether you are preparing to retire soon or simply exploring your options, it’s important to understand the key steps, timelines, and resources available to you as a valued member of our GUHSD community.

Retirement begins with confirming your eligibility through CalSTRS or CalPERS, depending on your position. Employees should review their service credit, age factor, and projected benefit amounts to determine the best retirement date. GUHSD recommends beginning this process 6–12 months in advance to ensure a smooth transition.
Once you select your retirement date, you will submit your official written notice to Human Resources and complete the district offboarding checklist. This includes returning district‑issued equipment, updating your mailing address, reviewing retiree medical eligibility, and finalizing any dependent coverage decisions. Employees who qualify for district‑paid medical benefits should verify their eligibility window and ensure all required documentation is submitted on time.

If you are 65 or older, additional steps may include enrolling in Medicare Part A and Part B, coordinating VEBA or other retiree medical plans, and ensuring there are no gaps in coverage. GUHSD provides guidance to help you navigate these requirements confidently.

Retirement is not just a procedural step — it is a celebration of your years of service, dedication, and impact on our students, staff, and community. Whether you are ready to retire now or planning ahead, GUHSD is committed to supporting you every step of the way.
