What is School Choice?

What:  A program that allows families to request a school other than the student's school of residence.
When: Request must be submitted during the "School Choice Window,"  For the 2021/2022 school year, it is 12/1/2020 through 3/5/2021, 4 PM. 
Sibling Transfers and Boundary Transitional areas: If your family qualifies for either of these, you must still complete an online registration and submit a School Choice Request during the School Choice Window

Opened: December 1, 2020 at 8:00 AM
Closed: March 5, 2021 4:00 PM

Notice of Approval

  • Anticipated March 29, 2021 after 4:00 PM
  • Posted to the Infinite Campus Portal by 4:00pm. 
  • All students who are approved for their first or second choice option will automatically be accepted to the new school. 
  • Students who do not receive their first or second choice option, but receive an approval for a third or fourth choice option, must confirm their acceptance.

Window to Accept Secondary Choice Option

Anticipated April 5-9, 2021 before 4:00 PM
Parent/guardians must accept approval of secondary choice option through their Infinite Campus Portal during this time. If you do not, your student will remain enrolled in the school of residence.

Things to Know Before You Make a School Choice Request

  • GUHSD cannot provide transportation for School Choice families. 
  • Sibling transfer and Boundary Transition transfer eligible families: You must register your student and submit a school choice request prior to the close of the School Choice window.
  • When making a school choice request, you may select a first choice option, as well as second, third, and fourth choice alternatives:
    • Every effort is made to place as many students as possible into the first choice requests.  When that cannot be accomodated, we will try to accommodate 2nd, third, and fourth choice requests. If none of the requests can be accommodated, your student will be placed in their school of residence.
    • If your school of residence is your first choice, you do not need to submit a school choice request. 
  • Sometimes a school will not have space to accommodate all requests.  When that happens, students are selected for that school based on a random lottery of all students whose families submitted requests for that school during the School Choice window. 
  • If your student is granted your first or second choice request, it will automatically be accepted for you, and your student will be transferred to that school.  If your student is granted your third or fourth choice, you must accept that school via your Parent Portal between April 5 and April 9, 2021
