On March 11, 2025, Grossmont Union High School District Governing Board President, Dr. Gary C. Woods, announced that Superintendent Mike Fowler had concluded his tenure as GUHSD Superintendent after reaching a mutual agreement with the Governing Board as he continues his medical treatment. Superintendent Fowler explained the decision in a video message shared at the Governing Board’s March 11 regular meeting.
 
The Grossmont Union High School District Board is in the process of conducting an Executive Search for the District’s next Superintendent. Leadership Associates, an executive search firm, was selected to advise the Board in this important process. Updates will be provided on this webpage throughout this process.

MARCH - APRIL 2025: Advertisement and Recruitment
March - April: Timeline approved and Consultants identify potential candidates; Development and posting of recruitment materials and Position Description
March - April: Advertising and active recruitment; Ad appears in EdCal, (Two consecutive publications)
April 18: Deadline for applications (by 5:00 PM)
 
APRIL - MAY 2025: Interviews and Selection
April - May: Consultants complete comprehensive reference and background checks on applicants
April: Board receives individual access to confidential applicant portal
May 5, 2025: Board confers with consultants, reviews all applications and selects candidates to be interviewed (Special Closed Session 4:00PM - 7:00PM)
May 16, 2025: Board interviews candidates; selects finalist(s) (Special Closed Session - all day)
 
MAY - JUNE 2025: Contract Approval
May - June 2025: Board completes the validation process of the leading candidate and makes final determination
June 10, 2025:  Board approves superintendent contract at a regularly scheduled board meeting
 
JULY 2025: Start Date
July 1 (as mutually agreed): New superintendent begins

 1)    How does the search process work?
The Board is working with Leadership Associates to conduct a rigorous, nationwide search. The Board will seek, receive, and consider all candidate applications, and interview those candidates determined by the Board and select the new Superintendent. 
 
2)    When will the new Superintendent be hired?
The Board has approved and published a timeline which reflect these details. These dates are subject to change as the search process continues.
 
4)    Who will make the final selection?
By law, the Board is solely responsible for hiring the new Superintendent. The Board will seek, receive, and consider all input from the community, review all applications, interview those candidates determined by the Board, and select the new Superintendent.
 
5)    How can the public follow this process?
Updates regarding the Superintendent search process will be posted here. The Board will also provide updates at its regularly scheduled board meetings and future press releases.
 
6)    Can we find out who is applying?
All application materials, including the names of applicants and any other personally identifiable information, are confidential under law.
