Studies show that one in five Americans will experience a long-term disability during their working years.
Long-term disability (LTD) insurance provides income to help pay your bills when a serious accident, chronic
illness or other disability prevents you from working. The District pays the premium to provide you with this
important coverage.

To be eligible for benefits, you must meet the plan’s definition of disability. Coverage begins after you have
been totally disabled for 120 calendar days. LTD benefits end when you are no longer disabled or you reach
the end of your benefit duration period, whichever is earlier. Benefit duration periods are determined by job
classification:

The long-term disability benefit for eligible employees is 66 2/3% of your salary up to a maximum $7,000
benefit per month. The minimum monthly benefit is $50. The benefit is taxable income to you.
LTD benefits are reduced by any other disability benefits to which you may be entitled, such as employer leave
pay, Social Security, CalPERS, Workers’ Compensation and similar programs.

Tax Considerations
Because disability coverage is an employer-paid benefit and is available for employees at no cost, any
disability payments made to you will be taxable.
