Grossmont Union High School District

This five-part safety series offers parents and families practical tools and information to support safe schools. When it comes to protecting students, staff, and schools, we all have a role to play.

Vaping – Part 2: This video provides students and families with important information about the dangers of vaping. Unfortunately, vaping continues to be a persistent issue on our campuses. Devices come in many shapes and sizes – some even disguised as everyday items like pens or USB drives. Vaping is never allowed at school, and it’s important for students to fully understand the associated risks. Resources and programs are available to support teens who want to quit.

Restrooms have one purpose: Student restrooms are intended for one thing and one thing only. When restrooms are misused for vaping, vandalism, or other unacceptable activities, it creates safety and supervision concerns. GUHSD staff regularly monitor restrooms to ensure they remain safe, respectful spaces for all students. Families can reinforce this message by reminding students that restrooms should be used responsibly and only for their intended purpose.

Closed Campuses: For the safety of all students and staff, our campuses are not accessible to the public during the school day. Community members must check in at the office, and students are required to remain on school grounds during school hours unless they have permission from the Attendance Office. If a family member needs to see a student during the school day, we ask that they come to the office, where staff can assist with the visit. A closed campus policy helps ensure proper supervision and a safe environment for everyone. In addition, please remember that food deliveries from places like Door Dash and Uber Eats are not allowed.

Reminder – Student Privacy is Protected by Law: Occasionally, incidents occur on campus that result in student discipline. It’s natural for families to want to know what actions were taken regarding all students involved. However, federal and state laws safeguard the privacy of student information and records. This means the school is legally prohibited from sharing details about specific disciplinary actions with anyone other than the parents or guardians of the student who received the discipline.

Reminder about P3 Tips: Students can report suspicious activity to San Diego Crime Stoppers using P3 Tips. The P3 app is available on all GUHSD Chromebooks and makes it easy to submit a report anonymously.

Sincerely,

District Safety Committee
