Grossmont Union High School District

This five-part safety series offers parents and families practical tools and information to support safe schools. When it comes to protecting students, staff, and schools, we all have a role to play.

Drills are important: Just like practicing for a game or a performance, safety drills help students and staff know exactly what to do in an emergency. GUHSD schools regularly conduct fire, evacuation, earthquake, and lockdown drills so that if real situations arise, everyone can respond quickly and calmly. Families can help by talking with students about taking drills seriously and viewing them as important practice to keep everyone safe.

Secure Campus and Lockdown: There are times when law enforcement or school officials may ask us to secure our campus in response to an emergency situation on or off campus. In a Secure Campus, classroom instruction continues, but exterior doors are locked and movement is limited. A Lockdown is more serious, requiring all students and staff to remain in classrooms or safe locations until cleared by law enforcement or school administration. GUHSD staff is trained to guide students during these situations, and our close coordination with local law enforcement helps us prioritize safety at all times.

Walk with a buddy: As a precautionary measure, please encourage your student to not walk to or from school alone. Walking with a buddy to and from campus decreases the potential for dangerous incidents.

School rules apply during school-sponsored events: Whether on campus, at an athletic game, a dance, or a field trip, students are representing their school and GUHSD. The same rules and expectations that apply during the school day also apply at school-sponsored events. These include guidelines around behavior, dress code, and safety. By following these expectations everywhere, students help create a positive environment that allows all participants to enjoy the event.

Reminder about P3 Tips: Students can report suspicious activity to San Diego Crime Stoppers using P3 Tips. The P3 app is available on all GUHSD Chromebooks and makes it easy to submit a report anonymously.

Sincerely,
