School Bus Driver Certification

School Bus Driver Certification

In order to become a certified school bus driver, you must successfully complete a minimum of 20 hours of classroom training and 20 hours of behind-the-wheel training. The classroom training teaches you about rules, regulations, theories and techniques involved with driving a school bus and transporting children.

The behind-the-wheel training teaches you how to perform a proper pre-trip inspection; how to drive and maneuver the bus; and the practical application of the knowledge you gained in your classroom training. You receive this training from a State Certified Instructor.

The California Highway Patrol is responsible for testing people to become school bus drivers. You must successfully complete all the tests set by State law to become a school bus driver.
