Searching

There is so much good stuff out there that can be used in the classroom. The only problem, finding it. While Google is the premier search engine, it is not the only one and not always the best choice. Plus, there are some techniques that will make your searching more efficient.

  • Activity: Four NETS for Better Searching

  • Google: Basics of Searching - Here it tells you how to expand or limit your search.
  • Google: Advanced Search - Search smarter. Look for just powerpoints, word files, or pdfs.
  • Altavista: Video Search - Unlike the other search engines, Altavista includes a video search link. Find clips for PowerPoints or to just show online. Remember only .mov files can be embedded in a PowerPoint, the others have to be linked.
  • Specialized Search Engines - Google and the others don't always find everything. Some information is password protected or within databases that can't be accessed. Try looking at these specialized search engines.
  • Technorati - Search for the latest information from blogs, wikis, and podcasts (Don't worry, more to come on this later).
