P               P015   PHYSICAL EDUCATION ‑ ASSESSMENT               5

Students will be placed in this course at the time of referral for consideration for Adapted PE During placement in this course the Adapted PE teacher according to a parent-approved assessment plan will assess the student.  Length of placement will be limited to the amount of time between referral for Adapted PE consideration and the action of the Adapted PE IEP Team.  If the IEP Team does not place the student in Adapted PE, he or she will be placed in the Physical Education Modified course or other appropriate physical education program.  During the placement in Physical Education ‑ Assessment, the student will receive full PE credit, but no grade.

P               P020   PHYSICAL EDUCATION MODIFIED              5

This courses will permits a student, with a temporary physical disability (*), to participate in a regular or modified Physical Education class when a medical doctor or physical education teacher has determined that the student needs physical activity and/or experiences modified to address his/her specific injury or illness.  Students assigned to participate under this course title will receive full credit.

*  "Temporary physical disability means a disability incurred while a pupil was a regular education pupil and which, at the termination of the temporary physical disability, the pupil can, without special intervention, reasonably be expected to return to his/her regular education class."  (California Administrative Code, Title 5, General Provisions, Article I, '3001 (v))

P               P030   PE CREDIT BY EXAMINATION                         5

Physical Education by Exam, "PE Credit by Exam," indicates successful completion of the District's Physical Education Opt-Out Examination.  Students, in the 10th grade, who receive a satisfactory score on the California Health and Fitness-related Test and pass a series of written and performance tests will receive credit for this course, including ten (10) credits toward their Physical Education graduation requirement.

This course is designed to combine health, physical education, and life management skills over a period of three-quarters.  The curriculum will be covered through classroom instructions as well as outside activities.  The health portion will include first aid, the human body, food choices, mental and emotional health, disease prevention and treatment, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.  The physical education portion will include motor learning, biomechanics, sports and games.  The life management skill portion will include self-esteem, substance abuse and addictive behaviors, stress management, suicide, death, values and goal setting, love vs. infatuation, dating and friendship, rape/acquaintance rape, human abuse, engagement and marriage, human sexuality, pregnancy, parenting and family relations and emergency situations.  This course meets the ninth grade physical education requirement as well as most of the elements required for life management skills.  The career components of life management will be met through Cougar Connections class. Exercise and Nutritional Science 3 meets the S2, Life Management skillšs graduation requirement.

P               P050   ACRO FITNESS                                       5

This class is designed for those students who enjoy tumbling, dance, cheer, stunting and performing. Students will learn beginning to advance skills in the areas mentioned as well as having performance opportunities. Prerequisite:  Students must have passed CORE Physical Education to be eligible to take this class.

P               P109   PHYSICAL EDUCATION 9th                              5

This is a semester survey, course that highlights the variety of aquatic activities that are available to students.  The course could be divided into two or three week units during which time students would learn the principal elements of each activity.  Prerequisite:  Beginning Swimming.

A course designed to acquaint students with the fundamentals of one or more types of dance.

P               P330   BEGINNING DANCE                           5

This course introduces students to the movement possibilities of the human body.  The course will emphasize good body mechanics and alignment techniques to develop muscle tone and cardiovascular fitness.  Students will be given opportunities for both personal and group creative expression through this dance form.

P               P332   INTERMEDIATE DANCE                 5

Intermediate Dance includes the elements of artistic and creative expression and aesthetic valuing. The historical and cultural context of the art from shall be included.  Connecting and applying dance to other subject areas, art forms and careers may result from participation in dance including cross-curricular endeavors with academics, visual arts, and PE.  Students will analyze and interpret dance in written form to satisfy the acad4mic requirement, Students may be given the opportunity to choreograph and perform both in and out of class.  See Performing Arts Section (L336).  This course meets the University of California "F" requirement.

P               P334   ADVANCED DANCE                          5

Advance Dance includes advanced movement, technique and choreography with emphasis on performance.  Advanced dance also includes the main areas of study outlined in the state framework while including written assignments and other cross-curricular opportunities. See Performing Arts Section (L338). This course meets the University of California "F" requirement.

P               P350   AEROBIC DANCE                               5

A course including aerobic exercises designed to provide continuous movement in presentation, causing an elevated but safe heart rate for 30 to 45 minutes.  Instruction in the relationship of cardiovascular health to overall fitness will be included.

P               P400   INDIVIDUAL/DUAL SPORTS                             5

A course designed to give students an introduction to the skills and knowledge required in order for participation in one or more individual or dual sports.

P               P425   COMBATIVES                  5

This is a course designed to teach the basic art of combatives as related to one or more combat sports.  Students will be instructed in both the offensive and defensive skills of each activity presented.  The course will emphasize safety equipment used in each area as well as the basic rules of conduct for all participation.

P               P445   GYMNASTICS, BEGINNING           5

This is an introductory gymnastics course.  The emphasis in this course will be on exposing students to the basic skills involved with the equipment presented.

P               P447   GYMNASTICS, INTERMEDIATE                           5

This is a more advanced gymnastics course.  Students must have instructor approval before enrollment.  Students will be allowed to specialize in several areas and work on advanced stunts as their skills allow.

P               P460   PHYSICAL FITNESS                          5

A course designed to improve the cardiovascular system of the student.  In addition to concentrating on students' muscle tone and strength, students will also receive information on how the body functions and how to set up a personalized physical fitness program.

P               P475   WEIGHT TRAINING                              5

A course designed to add bulk and/or strength to the student.  Instruction will be directed toward individual goals of the students.

P               P476   ADVANCED WEIGHT TRAINING                           5

This course is designed for the lifter who is interested in moving to the next strength level.  Students will be required to focus on the Olympic bench press, squat, power clean, and the trap bar.  Students will be instructed daily and tested every six weeks in the following areas: bench press, squats, power clean, hip sleds, military press, barbell curls, sit-ups, pushups, and dips.  Prerequisite:  Weight Training or demonstrated ability and knowledge.

P               P500   RACQUET SPORTS                          5

A course designed to provide instruction in one or more racquet sports.  Included will be instruction in skills, knowledge of strategies, and rules of the sports.

P               P600   TEAM SPORTS                                  5

A course designed to teach the beginning/intermediate student skills in one or more team sports. Included will be instruction in skills, knowledge of strategies and rules.

P               P6l0     CONTACT TEAM SPORTS           5

A course designed to teach beginning/intermediate skills in one or more contact team sports. Included will be instruction in skills and knowledge of the strategies and rules of the sports presented.  (Contact sports referred to are football, soccer and basketball.)

P               P658   VOLLEYBALL                  5

A course designed to provide beginning and/or intermediate instruction in the sport of volleyball. Included will be instruction in skills and knowledge of strategies and rules of volleyball.

P               P800   ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION              5

A course designed for students with permanent disabilities of a physical, mental, or emotional nature as defined in the California Administrative Code, Title 5, Article 3.1: INDIVIDUALS WITH EXCEPTIONAL NEEDS, Section 3030 and who cannot be served by the regular or modified physical education program.  In addition to the overall goals of improving and maintaining fitness and developing lifetime activity skills, each student will participate in activities related to specific goals and objectives related to his/her needs as identified by the IEP Team.  Placement in this course cannot occur until the complete IEP has been developed and approved by parent/guardian and the IEP Team.

P               P810   PE EXEMPTION                               NC

Currently there is no provision for recording in the permanent record the fact that a student has been officially exempted from regular PE.  This course number is recommended for use in a permanent record (transcript) entry.

P               P820   FIRST AID MET                     NC

This graduation requirement, when not met as a portion of the GUHSD ninth grade physical education program, may be completed in public or private school or through the American Red Cross.  Upon presentation of a Red Cross First Aid Certificate, verification of completion of the first aid requirement within a course, or verification of completion through an independent learning program, the first aid requirement for graduation will have been met.  This course carries NO CREDIT.

P               P830   SPORTS MEDICINE AIDE 1                               5

P               P831   SPORTS MEDICINE AIDE 2                               5

This course provides training in sports medicine and prevention and treatment of athletic injuries.  The course will cover the following areas of instruction: CPR, training room operation, exercise physiology, and types of injuries and treatment.  Students will gain experience in using tools of the trade (blood pressure cuffs and stethoscopes, elastic wraps and tapes).  Course requirements include personal fitness, participation in extracurricular events, and participation in on-the-job type training.  Students must be able to pass the CPR test.  This course is unleveled and offered to 10th-, 11th-, and 12th-grade students.

P               P835   ADVANCED SPORTS MEDICINE AIDE 1                          5

This course provides instruction in advanced topics related to the field of Sports Medicine.  Advance anatomy, exercise physiology, therapeutic modalities, therapeutic exercise, massage, and taping principles will be integrated with the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.  The focus of this class will be to prepare the students to work with school athletic teams as managers or student trainers.  Prerequisite: Sports Medicine Aide.

P               P840   SPECIAL STUDY/PHYSICAL EDUCATION               2.5

Students enrolled in this program will be assigned to individual instructors to develop an educational program.  Enrollment and completion of this course will achieve 2.5 credits.

Students enrolled in this program will be assigned to individual instructors to develop an educational program.  The instructor will designate the number of credits (normally 5 per semester).

This course is for a student who has been attending a school outside the Grossmont District.  The subject matter field has been identified, and the course description or title is not readily matched with a course in the Grossmont District Master Course Title Book.  Elective credit has been granted.
