This course is designed for the senior student interested in understanding the operations and institutions of economic systems as applied to our nations largest industry, agriculture.  The course provides entry-level training in agribusiness management.  Instruction covers basic economic principles, supply and demand, equilibrium price, record keeping, operation of cooperatives, budgeting, cash flow, planning and analysis, purchasing, marketing and relevant laws and regulations relating to agribusiness.  Students will also plan an agribusiness with respect to labor, equipment, financing, and general management decisions.  Students will use computers and software-featuring spreadsheets, databases, journals, depreciation, accounting and record keeping in their training. Students will also develop their leadership skills through participation in the FFA chapter and the many leadership activities that the chapter sponsors.  Students can be involved in activities including public speaking, parliamentary procedure, project demonstration and exposition and oral reporting. This class will meet the new UC/CSU ³G² elective requirement.  One year of this course will meet the district graduation requirement for economics.  Prerequisite:  California Agriculture or one other course in the Agriculture Department.  Approved by UC to meet 1 semester of elective credit.

This course will provide the student with knowledge of tractor, engines, and related equipment.  The operation and maintenance of selected equipment used in agriculture and landscaping in this area will be stressed.  Theory of 4‑cycle engines and minor repair will be discussed, as well as overall safety in operating and maintaining equipment.  Prerequisite:  Construction and Repair of Farm Projects.

This is a two‑semester course open to 10th through 12th grade students who have completed California Agriculture or one other course in the Vocational Agriculture Department.  The course covers units in FFA, projects, nutrition, diseases, carcass evaluation, genetics, anatomy and physiology.  This course can be taken concurrently with Construction and Repair of Farm Projects 1‑2.  Prerequisite:  California Agriculture or one other course in the Vocational Agriculture Department. When taken with California Agriculture 1‑2 will meet the one-year Life Science graduation requirement or a semester of this course and a semester of Plant Science 1-2, and California Agriculture 1‑2 will meet the one-year Life Science graduation requirement.  When taken with California Agriculture 1-2 AND Plant Science 1-2 (total, three years) will meet the two-year Science graduation requirement.

Integrated Animal Science is a one-year; laboratory science course designed for the college bound student with career interest in agriculture.  Using agriculture as the learning vehicle, this course emphasizes the principles, central concepts and inter-relationships among the following topics: evolution of domestic livestock species, ecological relationships among animals, humans and the environment, taxonomy of farm animals, the molecular and cellular aspects of life, growth and reproduction of farm animals, animal genetics, animal behavior, nutrition health and disease in farm animals, and the similarities between humans and animals.  The course is centered on an extensive laboratory and project component in order to connect the principles of life science with agricultural applications.  The course will also include a leadership component centered on FFA student activities and career development events.  Activities will include public speaking, parliamentary procedure, project demonstration and exposition and oral reporting.  This course when taken with Integrated Plant and Soil Science (A205-A206) will meet the Districtıs two-year Science graduation requirement. The student must pass California Agriculture with a grade of C or better to enter this course.

This two‑semester course is offered to 9th and 10 graders who have expressed an interest in the field of Agriculture.  Areas that will be covered in this course include FFA, animal science, vegetable and field crops, ornamental horticulture, natural resources, agriculture mechanics, and career opportunities in all areas of agriculture.  Emphasis will be placed on those clusters of occupations related to the program offered in Vocational Agriculture in the District.  The course will be a prerequisite for all other classes in the Vocational Agriculture program.  FFA activities will be encouraged and a productive or work experience project will be required.  When taken with Animal Science 1‑2 or Plant Science 1‑2 will meet the one-year Life Science graduation requirement.  When taken with a semester of Animal Science 1‑2 and a semester of Plant Science 1‑2, will meet the one-year Life Science graduation requirement.  When taken with Animal Science 1-2 AND Plant Science 1-2 (total, three years) will meet the two-year Science graduation requirement.

This course offers a study of air, soil, water and wildlife in relationship to the forests and other plants. Particular attention will be paid to skills necessary for entry-level jobs as firefighters.

This course includes landscape planning and design and landscapes installation and maintenance. Specific areas studied will include landscape planning, lawn installation, turf grass maintenance, soils management, fertilization, turf diseases, pest control, etc.  The approach will be through the actual planning, installation, and proper maintenance of landscape features such as lawns, trees, ground covers, shrubs, etc.

Study and training in those mechanical skills involved in the horticulture industry‑‑particularly landscape construction.  Specific areas covered will include carpentry, concrete work, electricity, masonry, and plumbing necessary in landscape planning and construction.  The approach will be through the actual designing and construction of patios, retaining walls, fences, garden lighting, sprinkling systems, etc.

This course provides a background in metal fabrication and its relation to the agriculture field.  It is designed to instruct the student in oxyacetylene, shielded metal arc, MIG welding processes, layout and joining techniques for hot and cold metals, forge and making machine tools, sheet metal, properties of metals, and use of metal working equipment that would be used in an agriculture metal shop.  The course will also utilize FFA and supervised occupational experience to develop leadership, record keeping, and gain practical experience.  Prerequisite:  Completed California Agriculture (A070-A071) with C or better on Instructor's permission.

A two‑semester course designed primarily for the 10th and 11th grade that presents a study of California crops and the interrelationship of air, water, nutrients, and soil.  Emphasis is on the science of plant growth and development.  The course covers land preparation, seeding, fertilizers, insect and pest control, herbicide, pesticide and fertilizer safety, and harvesting.  Public speaking and parliamentary procedure are stressed in order to train the student in FFA leadership.  An important part of the program is the FFA and the project requirement.  This course can be taken concurrently with Construction and Repair of Farm Projects 1-2.  Prerequisite:  California Agriculture or one other course in the Vocational Agriculture Department.  When taken with California Agriculture 1-2, will meet the one-year Life Science graduation requirement or a semester of this course AND a semester of Animal Science 1-2, and California Agriculture 1-2 will meet the one-year Life Science graduation requirement.  When taken with Animal Science 1-2 AND California Agriculture 1-2 (total, three years) will meet the two-year Science graduation requirement.

This laboratory science course is designed for college bound students with career interests in agriculture.  Using agriculture as the learning vehicle, the course emphasizes the principles, central concepts and inter-relationships among the following topics: the chemical and structural basis of life, taxonomy of plants, evolution of modern agricultural crops, growth and reproduction in plants, plant genetics and the ecological relationship between plants, humans, air, water nutrients and soil. The course is centered on an extensive laboratory and project component in order to connect the principals of life, earth and physical science with agricultural applications.  Laboratories and practical application of land preparation, seeding, fertilizers, insect and pest control, herbicide, pesticides, and fertilizer safety, and harvesting of crops will enhance the studentıs educational experience.  The course will also include a leadership component centered on FFA student activities and career development events.  Activities will include public speaking, parliamentary procedure, project demonstration and exposition and oral reporting.  This course when taken with Integrated Animal Science (A065-A066) will meet the Districtıs two-year Science graduation requirement.  The student must pass California Agriculture with a grade C or better to enter this course.

This course is designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine, or animal husbandry and management.  The course provides an advanced study of common diseases associated with livestock and the means of diagnosis, prevention treatment and control. Course work will include advanced anatomy and physiology of domestic farm animals, nutrition, reproduction, genetics, artificial insemination, embryo transfer, biotechnology involving farm animals, and internal and external parasite prevention, treatment, and control.  Advanced animal husbandry will be emphasized by the implementation of student research projects.  Students will gain practical experience in veterinary medicine by conducting hands on laboratories and activities with livestock. Visits to veterinary clinics, local farms and ranches, and demonstrations by practicing veterinarians will enhance the curriculum.  The course will also include a leadership component centered on FFA student activities and career development events.  Activities will include public speaking, parliamentary procedure, project demonstrations and exposition and oral reporting.  Prerequisite: Prerequisite: A grade of "C" or better in Animal Science.  Completing this yearlong course will meet 1 semester of UC elective credit.
