Course Description
On Your Own is a two semester course that meets the Career and Family graduation requirement. On Your Own is a course that prepares students to face the challenging transition from high school to the world of being on your own The first semester covers journal writing, decision making skills, goal setting, communication techniques, relationships with family, friends and self, dating, engagement, marriage customs, health, nutrition and more. The second semester covers time mangement, making a budget, checking accounts, credit cards, insurance, buying and maintaining a car, cooking made easy, doing the laundry, sewing basics and more.

Two semesters of On Your Own fulfils the Consumer and Family graduation requirement.

Course Assignments:
Semester One

1. Six applied learning projects (two per six weeks)
2. Three article reviews (One per six weeks)
3. Daily Journals
4. 3 Movie reviews
5. Attendance Grade
6. Notebook
7. Final exam

Requirements and Expectations

1. Due to the interactive nature of the course, you are expected to have a good attendance record . You can not make up class discussions or speaker presentations. An attendance grade will be given at the end of the semester.
2. You will be expected to keep all returned papers in a notebook format. You will receive a note book grade at the end of the semester.
3. The grade you receive will reflect the quality of the work you submit. A portion of each grade will be allocated to presentation and neatness.
4. All papers must be typed (unless otherwise advised) and must include YOUR NAME.
5. No food will be allowed in the classroom.
6. You will be expected to follow the Valhalla High School discipline code as outlined in the student handbook.
7. I do not like to write referrals or spend my valuable time tracking down your parents to discuss your behavior.
8. The classroom computers are for class work only. YOU MAY NOT CHECK E-MAIL OR SEND E-MAIL FROM THESE COMPUTERS. CHAT ROOMS ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED.



A few things I shouldn't have to mention:

* You need a pass to leave class. Please do not leave without one.
*Inappropriate language is inappropriate.
*Please do not mess with anything that is not yours. (Explicitly, my stuff.)
*Cell phones are prohibited in class.
*Clean up your mess!!
