Title: A Soldier's Life PowerPoint

Components: A Soldier's Life PowerPoint, A Soldier's Life Notes Handout

Time: 1-2 periods

CA Social Science Curriculum Standards 10.5 (Students analyze the causes and course of the First World War) and 10.6 (Students analyze the effects of the First World War).

Description: A two day presentation that depicts the life of a foot soldier in World War I. Images of individual soldiers, conditions at the front, and the tragedy of wartime casualties have a profound impact on students and their sterilized, glamorized view of violence and war.

In addition to the PowerPoint presentation, a WWI Poetry activity has also been included. This activity is to be done after the presentation. Students read and analyze poetry by WWI soldiers and then write their own poem or a letter home. Here are a selection of student examples.

Downloadables:

  • A Soldier's Life PowerPoint (download presention 3.8mb) (view online)
Note: During the final section of this PowerPoint depicting wartime casualties, I use Sting's Children's Crusade as background music. Children's Crusade can be found on Sting's Dream of the Blue Turtles album.
  • A Soldier's Life Notes Handout (pdf)
  • World War I Poetry Activity (pdf)
Lesson suggestion: Analyze in Flander's Field as a class, the rest of the poems should be done individually or in small groups.
