The Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) has named Santana High School teacher Liz Castagnera as its Education Innovator of the Month for April. Superintendent Terry Ryan said, "Liz is devoted to making a difference in the lives of a very special group of students.  For her, teaching is not a vocation it’s an avocation."

And when it comes to helping students, Liz Castagnera wrote the book.  An author featured in numerous publications, Liz is also a highly sought after speaker delivering presentations on Inclusive Education, Curricular Modifications, and Peer Tutoring.  Principal Kathy Burton said, "Words cannot express the love and compassion that Liz shows for each and every one of her students."

In order to truly appreciate the work that she does each and every day, you need to know a little about the type of student she serves. Some of them have Down’s syndrome, others have autism, cerebral palsy, and some are visual and hearing–impaired, all within the same classroom setting.   While other teachers are teaching history or algebraic equations, Liz is implementing innovative strategies and curricular modifications that equip her students with effective communication skills and appropriate social strategies.

She is a leader in the area of inclusive education, which is designed to incorporate students with disabilities into general education classrooms.  As such, Liz’s typical day might include spending time in a French class with one of her students, modifying the curriculum on the spot and helping him get involved in the class activity.  She might then move on to teach a reading class where she uses material that will supplement the other courses in which the students are enrolled.  Although her daily tasks vary extensively, and at times are quite challenging, her calm and confident approach is reassuring to her students and is reflected in their achievements.

In addition to all of the effort she puts into the student’s instructional opportunities, Liz organizes and oversees peer tutors who work side by side with her students. These students receive elective credit for providing support to a student with a disability in their general education classes.

Beyond the classroom, Liz is frequently seen at many after school activities supporting her students whom she encourages to participate in extra-curricular activities such as cheer, swim, track, tennis and school dances. She also serves as an advisor to the Key Club and Best Buddies, which links up a student with a disability with a non-disabled peer.  As "buddies," they spend time doing things socially, such as participating in extra-curricular activities within the school, or going to the movies, shopping, and playing video games.

Personalizing education and infusing crucial skills is Liz Castagnera's specialty.  She interacts with over sixty students daily.  Colleague Geoff Tobias noted, "Liz is incredibly dedicated, and viewed by the staff as a great asset.  She's always looking for a way to make things better for our students and takes great pride in modifying lessons for increased student success."  Indeed, Santana's students and staff are very fortunate to have her at their site.
