Pharmacy Technician

Average Annual Salary for San Diego County: $20,000-$27,000

Job Description:
As the population ages, the demand for Pharmacy Technicians is increasing rapidly! Pharmacy technicians help licensed pharmacists provide medication and other health care products to patients. Specific duties may include:

  • Receiving written prescriptions or requests for prescription refills from patients;
  • Receiving prescriptions sent electronically from the doctor’s office;
  • Verifying that information on prescriptions is complete and accurate;
  • Preparing prescriptions – retrieving, counting, pouring, weighing, measuring, and sometimes mixing the medications;
  • Preparing prescription labels, selecting type of prescription container, and affixing the prescription and auxiliary labels to the container;
  • Pricing and filing prescriptions, under the direction of a pharmacist;
  • Establishing and maintaining patient profiles, preparing insurance claim forms, and stocking and taking inventory of prescriptions and over-the-counter medications;
  • In hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted-living facilities, pharmacy technicians have added responsibilities.
