Grossmont Health Occupations Center: Who are we anyhow??

Ann Vroom, Director
Grossmont Health Occupations Center (HOC) is one of six centers of Grossmont Adult School, in the Grossmont Union High School District. HOC has provided education in healthcare occupations since 1957 when, in response to a nursing shortage after World War II, it admitted its first class of Vocational Nurses. At that time, the school was housed in a Quonset hut on the grounds of Grossmont Hospital.

HOC has grown tremendously over the years, with approximately 3000 students now attending each year. HOC has an excellent reputation in the community and is very proud of the many highly successful graduates working throughout the county. The Vocational Nursing (VN) program graduates approximately 55 nurses each year, with a very high pass rate on the licensure examination. Many graduates go on to the Step-Up Programs at community colleges to become registered nurses. The intensive, one-semester Nurse Refresher-Reentry program gives Nurses the knowledge and clinical skills they need to successfully return to their profession.

In addition to the Nursing programs, HOC offers many other courses, listed below:

    • Dental Assistant
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
    • Healthcare Essentials
    • Medical Lab Asst./Phlebotomy Technician
    • Medical Assistant, Administrative
    • Medical Assistant, Clinical
    • Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide
    • Nurse Refresher/Reentry (RN and LVN)
    • Pharmacy Technician
    • Veterinary Assistant Vocational Nursing
    • Medical Support courses, including:
Introductory Coding; Healthcare Interpreting;Medical/Dental/Optical Billing;Medical Receptionist and Insurance Forms; Medical Terminology; English and MathReview; and Spanish for Healthcare Workers
    • Continuing Education and General Education courses for RN’s, LVN’s, CNAs and EMT’s including:
Advanced Cardiac Life Support; EMT Refresher; Intravenous Therapy; Continuing Education for CNAs; and Understanding Cardiac Arrhythmia

All courses at HOC are offered at reasonable cost. Some courses require only that students pay for their books. Students in the most expensive program, Vocational Nursing, pay $2500 for their entire three-semester course, including books and uniforms. Limited financial aid is available for qualified students.

HOC students receive their clinical instruction in some of the finest medical facilities in San Diego County, including acute care hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, outpatient pediatric clinics, pharmacies, medical and dental offices, and a number of skilled nursing facilities.
