ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES FOR ENROLLMENT
1. Special Education Small Group and Individualized Instruction Program (SGII)
This program is for students who have qualified for special education. Students are
referred via the individualized education program (IEP) team. Students must be enrolled
in a comprehensive high school, possess a 5th grade reading level and a demonstrated
history of being able to work independently. It is for students who encounter difficulties
functioning on a regular high school campus. Students meet with the teacher once
a week at a regularly scheduled appointment in a public place near their home school,
usually a public library, and they are required to do a minimum of 20 hours a week
of schoolwork. Students work on one class at a time and work on core subjects. Once
the IEP team, including the parent, have agreed to refer the student to the SGII
program, enrollment in the local school is confirmed and all the necessary paperwork
is signed by the parent. After these prerequisite steps have been completed, the
teacher assigned to the particular school will contact the family and set up an appointment
to review and obtain parent and student consent to the individual student contract
agreement and determine the appointment schedule.

2. Special Education Home Choice Program
Home Choice is a program for students who receive their primary instruction from a parent or person in the home who is available every day for the duration of school hours to instruct the student. Home Choice is a separate department from the Special Education Individualized Programs Department. Placement in the Special Education component of this program is an IEP team decision when parent as the primary instructor criteria is met. The Special Education teacher for this program is aligned with our Individualized Programs Department for purposes of being informed about District and Special Education issues. The teacher assigns materials and gives weekly tests. The Home Choice program is located next to El Cajon Valley High School and the number is 593-2760.

3. Home Study (Home/Hospital Program)
The Home Study program is available for students who are home or hospital bound due
to a medical condition or illness of a duration of some length. For quarter schools
this would be at least 2 weeks, and for semester schools, the time would be one month.
Entry into the program is based on the above medical condition and time line, and
completion of a Special Education Individualized
Programs Request for Service Form by the parent and a Special
Education Individualized Programs Medical Form completed by a medical doctor,
psychiatrist, or licensed mental health professional. These forms are available only
through our office (note* - our form is not the “Physicians Statement” for a 504
Accommodation or PH/DIS services to stay in school – these are available in the high
school Counseling Offices). The parent or school counselor should call our office
(401-4128) for the forms which can be mailed out or picked up at the office. These
forms should be completed and returned as quickly as possible. The program is available
to all students who meet the criteria described above. Special Education students
additionally require an IEP meeting to reflect a change in delivery of educational
services.
When the medical condition does not clearly require an in-home instructor, the head of the department will consult with the doctor so that the best and least restrictive placement can be made. There are programs in the District that serve students who cannot attend school regularly but who do not qualify for Home Study. The intent of Home Study is to keep the student current with each on-campus class. As often as possible and practical, the materials, assignments, or content that is being done in school is required of the student to insure a successful and smooth return to school. A teacher comes to the student’s home for 2 – 5 hours of instruction per week, depending on the schedule. Home Study cannot give credit for AP or Honors courses, for College prep science classes requiring a lab, or for elective performance classes. For these last considerations, we work with schools and the students on an individual basis.
