PP001PHYSICAL EDUCATION5
- A year course planned for all students in the school. Physical Education is a two year required course for graduation. This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to experience physical activity, improve physical and mental well-being, learn lifetime sports skills, and increase individual fitness and ability. This course takes individual differences into account in the teaching of team sports, individual sports, fitness and aquatic activities. First Aid and CPR graduation requirements are included in this course. Physical Education also encompasses additional health related topics such as: HIV/AIDS, steroids, drug abuse, smoking, and eating disorders.
PP015 PHYSICAL EDUCATION - ASSESSMENT5
- Students will be placed in this course at the time of referral for consideration for Adapted P.E. During placement in this course the student will be assessed by the Adapted P.E. teacher according to the parent-approved assessment plan. Length of placement will be limited to the amount of time between referral for Adapted P.E. consideration and the action of the Adapted P.E. IEP Team. If the student is not placed in Adapted P.E. by the IEP Team, he/she will be placed in the Physical Education Modified course or other appropriate physical education program. During the placement in Physical Education - Assessment, the student will receive full P.E. credit, but no grade.
PP020PHYSICAL EDUCATION MODIFIED5
- This courses permits a student, with a temporary physical disability*, to participate in a regular or modified Physical Education class when a medical doctor or physical education teacher has determined that the student needs physical activity and/or experiences modified to address his/her specific injury or illness. Students assigned to participate under this course title will receive full credit.
- * "Temporary physical disability means a disability incurred while a pupil was a regular education pupil and which, at the termination of the temporary physical disability, the pupil can, without special intervention, reasonably be expected to return to his/her regular education class." (California Administrative Code, Title 5, General Provisions, Article I, §3001 (v)).
P P030 P.E. CREDIT BY EXAMINATION 5
- Physical Education by Exam, "P.E. Credit by Exam," indicates successful completion of the District's Physical Education Opt-Out Examination. Students, in the 10th grade, who receive a satisfactory score on the California Health and Fitness-related Test and pass a series of written and performance tests will receive credit for this course, including ten (10) credits toward their Physical Education graduation requirement.

- A semester survey course which highlights the variety of aquatic activities that are available to students. The course could be divided into two or three week units during which time students would learn the principal elements of each activity. Prerequisite: Beginning Swimming.
PP230BEGINNING SWIMMING5
- A course designed to teach the non-swimmer and/or novice swimmer the fundamental principles of water survival, survival floating, side stroke, front crawl, and elementary backstroke. Emphasis will be placed on acclimatization to the water and basic movements through the water.
PP240INTERMEDIATE SWIMMING5
- A course designed to review the principles of swimming with an emphasis towards proficiency in all strokes. Strokes to be covered are: front crawl, back crawl, side stroke, inverted breaststroke, trudgen, double trudgen, breaststroke, and butterfly. Prerequisite: Beginning Swimming.
PP245ADVANCED SWIMMING5
- A course designed for the individual who prefers to improve their cardiovascular endurance while refining their stroke technique. Special emphasis is given to stroke mechanics, physiology, and understanding the world of competitive swimming. Prerequisite: Intermediate Swimming or equivalent performance on competency test.
PP255EMERGENCY WATER SAFETY5
- A course designed to familiarize students with the current American Red Cross standards for Emergency Water Safety Certification. Emphasis will be placed on lifesaving techniques, CPR, and swimming pool safety.

- A course designed to acquaint students with the fundamentals of one or more types of dance.
PP330BEGINNING MODERN DANCE5
- A course to introduce students to the movement possibilities of the human body. The course will emphasize good body mechanics and alignment techniques to develop muscle tone and cardiovascular fitness. Students will be given opportunities for both personal and group creative expression through this dance form.
PP332INTERMEDIATE MODERN DANCE5
- This course will include the same elements of beginning modern dance with additional emphasis on choreography and the relationship of Modern Dance to other art forms.
PP334ADVANCED MODERN DANCE5
- An advanced course in modern dance, stressing advanced movement techniques and challenging choreography opportunities.
PP350AEROBIC DANCE5
- A course including aerobic exercises designed to provide continuous movement in presentation, causing an elevated but safe heart rate for 30 to 45 minutes. Instruction in the relationship of cardiovascular health to overall fitness will be included.
PP400INDIVIDUAL/DUAL SPORTS5
- A course designed to give students an introduction to the skills and knowledge required to participate in one or more individual or dual sports.
PP410BACKPACKING5
- A course designed for students interested in learning about skills and equipment necessary for backpacking in comfort and safety in a wilderness situation. Emphasis will be placed upon good physical conditioning and knowledge of skills necessary for living in primitive areas.
PP420BOWLING5
- A course designed to introduce and encourage student participation in the sport of bowling. This course is designed to teach students the basic skills of bowling and offer them the opportunity to practice bowling, scoring, and the etiquette of lane use.
PP425COMBATIVES5
- A course to teach the basic art of combatives as related to one or more combat sports. Students will be instructed in both the offensive and defensive skills of each activity presented. The course will emphasize safety equipment used in each area as well as the basic rules of conduct for all participation.
PP445GYMNASTICS, BEGINNING5
- An introductory course in gymnastics. The emphasis in this course will be on exposing students to the basic skills involved with the equipment presented.
PP447GYMNASTICS, INTERMEDIATE5
- This is a more advanced course in gymnastics. Students must have instructor approval before enrollment. Students will be allowed to specialize in several areas and work on advanced stunts as their skills allow.

- A course designed to improve the cardiovascular system of the student. In addition to concentrating on students' muscle tone and strength, students will also receive information on how the body functions and how to set up a personalized physical fitness program.

- This course will relate the principles of fitness, exercise, and general well being to the concepts of sound nutrition. The fitness assignment will include individual body measurement, fitness testing, discovery of lean body mass, heart rate calculations, and a variety of aerobic type activities. This class will be coordinated with J350, Nutrition and Fitness 1 and J351, Nutrition and Fitness 2 in Home Economics. Students will receive 2.5 credits per semester from each discipline and will meet with each instructor on alternate days.

- This is an extension of Fitness and Nutrition 1 and 2. The course is designed to give students more detailed instruction and follow-up information in the areas introduced by the previous course content. Students will also be introduced to the topics of exercise physiology, the circulatory system and sports injuries. Prerequisite: Completion of Fitness and Nutrition 1 and 2.
PP475WEIGHT TRAINING5
- A course designed to add bulk and/or strength to the student. Instruction will be directed toward individual goals of the students.
PP476 ADVANCED WEIGHT TRAINING 5
- This course is designed for the lifter who is interested in moving to the next strength level. Students will be required to focus on the Olympic bench press, squat, power clean, and trap bar. Students will be instructed daily and tested every six weeks in the following areas: bench press, squats, power clean, hip sled, military press, barbell curl, situps, pushups, and dips. Prerequisite: Weight Training or demonstrated ability and knowledge.

- A course designed to provide instruction in one or more racquet sports. Included will be instruction in skills, knowledge of strategies, and rules of the sports.

- A course designed to teach the beginning and intermediate skills in one or more team sports. Included will be instruction in skills, knowledge of strategies and rules.
PP6l0CONTACT TEAM SPORTS5
- A course designed to teach beginning or intermediate skills in one or more contact team sports. Included will be instruction in skills and knowledge of the strategies and rules of the sports presented. (Contact sports referred to are football, soccer and basketball.)
PP650NON-CONTACT TEAM SPORTS5
- A course designed to provide beginning and/or intermediate instruction in various non-contact sports (i.e. volleyball, slow pitch, and over-the-line). Included will be instruction in skills and knowledge of strategies and rules for the sports presented.

- A course designed to provide beginning and/or intermediate instruction in the sport of volleyball. Included will be instruction in skills and knowledge of strategies and rules of volleyball.
PP800ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION5
- A course designed for students with permanent disabilities of a physical, mental, or emotional nature as defined in the California Administrative Code, Title 5, Article 3.1: INDIVIDUALS WITH EXCEPTIONAL NEEDS, Section 3030 and who cannot be served by the regular or modified physical education program. In addition to the overall goals of improving and maintaining fitness and developing lifetime activity skills, each student will participate in activities related to specific goals and objectives related to his/her needs as identified by the IEP Team. Placement in this course cannot occur until the complete IEP has been developed and approved by parent/guardian and the IEP Team.

- Currently there is no provision for recording in the permanent record the fact that a student has been officially exempted from regular P.E. Recommended for use in permanent record (transcript) entry.
PP820FIRST AID METNC
- This graduation requirement, when not met as a portion of the GUHSD ninth grade physical education program, may be completed in public or private school or through the American Red Cross. Upon presentation of a Red Cross First Aid Certificate, verification of completion of the first aid requirement within a course, or verification of completion through an independent learning program, the first aid requirement for graduation will have been met. This course carries NO CREDIT.

- Students enrolled in this program will be assigned to individual instructors to develop an educational program. Enrollment and completion of this course will achieve 2.5 credits.
