Grossmont Union High School District

Welcome to Grossmont Union High School District!

Welcome to Grossmont Union High School District!

This page is for parents of students coming to us from middle school as a new high school student and for parents of students transferring in from other high school districts. We hope to answer some of your questions and ease your family's transition to a new school district.

Q:  Is Grossmont a school or a school district?
A:  It's both!  Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) comprises a set of high schools serving several East County communities, including El Cajon, La Mesa, Spring Valley, Lemon Grove, Santee, Lakeside, and Alpine.  Our attendance area also includes a portion of East San Diego. Our first high school was Grossmont High School.

Q: Which school will my child attend?
A: That depends on where you live.  Students are assigned to schools based on their home address. You can find your student's school by entering your address into our School Locator Map

Q: Which schools are part of GUHSD?
A: A comprehensive list of our schools, including the charter schools that we support, is on our Schools page.

Q: How do I register my student?
A: You must complete an online registration.
More information: See the Registration and the Student Registration Help pages

Q: I want my student to attend a different high school than my GUHSD-assigned school. How do I register for the school I want?
A: First, your student must be registered with our district, which does assign your student to the school of residence.  After that, you may participate in School Choice during the School Choice window. This year that window opens December 1, 2023 at 8:00 AM and closes February 23, 2024 4:00 PM.
More information: See the pages Registration and School Choice Overview and School Choice

Q: If my student has a sibling at another school, does my student automatically get to attend that school?
A: No. You still have to register your student and make a school choice request.  However, students with siblings in the same household who will be attending at the same time will have priority during School Choice.
Note: Sibling transfer only applies to siblings in the same primary household. When registering your new student, make sure that all parent/guardian and household information is correct and matches what we have for your older student, otherwise we will not be aware of the sibling relationship.

Q: Can you help me register my student for a charter school?
A: You will need to contact the charter school directly. Charter schools (e.g., Steele Canyon, Helix) operate independently, so we have no visibility into their registration.

Q: How do I get a bus pass for my student?
A: All transportation questions should be addressed to the Transportation department. See the Transportation pages, or call them at (619) 644-8186.

Q: How can I sign my student up for lunches?
A: See the Food Services Page, or call them at (619) 644-8183.

Q: Is there a Freshman Orientation?
A: Most schools usually offer both a Freshman Showcase and a Freshman Orientation. Freshman Showcases are usually sometime in January or February, and  Freshman Orientation is usually shortly before the new school year starts.
More Information: Contact the specific school.  Contact information for schools is available on the Schools page.

Q: I am registering my student mid-year.  What do I do after I complete the registration?
A: After the registration for a new student is processed, you will receive an email confirmation that the registration was processed. After receiving the email, contact your student's school for next steps. If you do not know your student's school, check the School Locator or contact the Educational Technology Services (ETS) Help Desk at 619-956-4357.  If your student is returning after a break in enrollment, contact the school assigned to your residence after you submit the registration.

Q: I have a question not answered here.
A: If the question is regarding academic programs at a specific school, student schedule, grades, or to change your home address after the registration is processed, please contact your student's school. If the question is about registration or school choice, contact the Educational Technology Services (ETS) Help Desk at help@guhsd.net or call 619-956-4357. For other questions, contact the appropriate GUHSD department (e.g., Transportation, Food Services, Student Support Services, etc.). If you don't know who to contact, you may contact the ETS Help Desk at help@guhsd.net or call 619-956-4357 and we will help you find the right department for your question.
